How to Select an industrial Gearbox

  • Basically, Industrial Gearboxes are two different kind of Gearbox
    1. Speed reducer Gear Box

Speed Reducer Gearboxes are the Gearboxes which reduced the gearbox output Rpm at certain fixed ratio and increase the Desired amount of Torque according to the Gearbox Ratio.

So, before Selection of any Gearbox, we need to know where we want to installed or on which input & output, we want to use the gearbox

    1. Speed increaser Gearbox

Speed increaser Gearboxes are the Gearboxes which increase the gearbox output Rpm at certain fixed ratio and Reduce the Desired amount of Torque according to the Gearbox Ratio.

Before Selection of Gearbox, we need to Check the Following Points as mentioned below

    1. What we want to Drive through a Gearbox like conveyor, crusher Mill, Turbine etc.
    2. How we are giving the input power/torque to the Gearbox for Example, Electric motor, hydraulic motor, Diesel engine, Steam turbine, Gas turbine or another Gearbox output
    3. Calculate the desired RPM or Ratio Required
    4. Calculate the Torque Required
    5. Check the Duty Cycle how many hours we want to use say 8hrs, 16hrs, 24hrs.
    6. Check the Load type Starting Shock Load , Smooth Load , Medium Shock Load, Heavy Shock Load
    7. Continuity of Load type at Start Stop or Some Cyclic Duration in Time for Example 20 to 50 times in a day, 50 to 150 times in a day, 300 & above in a day
    8. Check Mechanical Rating of Gearbox
    9. Check thermal Rating of Gearbox
    10. Check the Application Service factor Required
    11. Check Application Specific Mounting Parameters like Foundation Details, Shaft Extensions, Bore Sizes, Shaft/ Foot/ Flange/ Torque arm mountings
    12. Check if Drive or gearbox Required any Fan cooling, Forced Lubrication & cooling Required
